BYD Blade Battery Powers All-New e6 in India: All Set to Redefine Battery Safety and Single-charge Range Standards

Sets benchmark for outstanding safety, strength, range, and power
All-New e6 - India's first model to adopt BYD blade battery technology

Feb 21, 2022

Chennai, India - BYD (Build Your Dreams) India, a subsidiary of the Warren Buffett-backed EV maker BYD, the global pioneer and one of the world's largest new energy vehicle maker, announced that their All-New e6, India's first premium eMPV launched recently in India for the B2B segment is India's first model to be powered by BYD revolutionary Blade Battery.

The All-New e6, India's first premium eMPV was launched in India in November 2021 with an aim to revolutionize the eMPV segment starting with a B2B push. The All-New e6 is extremely safe, spacious, reliable, cost-saving, environmentally friendly and equipped with both fast and slow charging function, making it a complete package for the B2B segment.

All new energy vehicles from BYD will come with the ultra-safe Blade Battery. In addition, the company will also provide its Blade Battery to other leading OEMs globally, thus leading the electric revolution globally.

Launched by BYD in 2020, Blade Battery is the only battery that successfully passes the nail penetration test, the most rigorous way to test the thermal runaway of batteries. While undergoing nail penetration tests, Blade Battery emits neither smoke nor fire after being penetrated, and its surface temperature only reaches 30 to 60°C. Under the same conditions, a ternary lithium battery mostly exceeds 500°C and violently burns, and while a conventional lithium iron phosphate block battery does not openly emit flames or smoke, its surface temperature reaches dangerous temperatures of 200 to 400°C. That means Blade Battery is ultra-safe.

Blade Battery passes other extreme test conditions as well, such as being crushed, bent, being heated in a furnace to 300°C and overcharged by 260%, None of these resulted in a fire or explosion. At the same time, Blade Battery completed an extreme strength test that saw a 46-tonne truck driving right over it, once again resetting the bar for power battery safety.

Also, the space utilization of the Blade Battery pack increases by over 50%, compared with that of conventional lithium iron phosphate block batteries, resulting in significant improvements in energy efficiency and range.

Mr. [SANJAY GOPALAKRISHNAN], Head - Electric Passenger Vehicle - BYD India Private Limited, said, "We give battery safety the highest priority when it comes to our EVs. It is a matter of great pride that this technology will now be a highlight in all BYD pure electric products in our country. This will assure all our customers that BYD's pure electric products offer safety and reliability of the highest standards with best-in-class design and performance. We are keen on bringing many more variants apart from the e6 when we start serving India's B2C segment equipped with blade battery technology."

In addition to solving the issue of range - once a limitation to the development of traditional lithium iron phosphate batteries - Blade Battery can also support fast charging. In short, the strategy of applying Blade Battery will make EVs safer and accelerate the pace of vehicle electrification across the world.
